L'Escala is a typical Spanish town, rich in history and cultural heritage, especially when it comes to religious holidays, festivals, and various other types of celebrations. Tourism has changed many things in L'Escala, but a few of the old traditions still survive to this day.
January 5: The Epiphany
The feast of the Epiphany is a celebration commemorating the roles of the three kings of the east when they visited the newborn Jesus Christ.
February: Carnival
Every town in Spain has its own carnival week, and L'Escala is no exception. When the carnival comes to town, all work stops, replaced by non-stop merrymaking and partying that lasts for the better part of a whole week. There are special performances, concerts, and plays that take place on a daily basis, and people dress in costumes as they go about their revelry.
March 24-28: Holy Week
The Lenten season, which starts sometime in late February to early March, is a very important and very solemn Catholic season. The season of Lent is characterized by abstinence from eating meat on Fridays, and various solemn processions leading up to the Holy Week. During this week, the events leading up to the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ are remembered and reflected upon. The Holy Week ends on Easter Sunday, which is a day of great joy and celebration within the Catholic community.
July 16: Festa de Nuestra Señora del Carmen
Feast of the patron saint of fishermen. This is a very old tradition that is enjoyed by both locals and tourists. There is a pilgrimage and procession bearing the statue of the saint to the church of Sant Pere.
September 2 - 6: Festa Major
This is a special celebration that honors and commemorates the Sardana, the traditional dance of Catalonia.
October: Festa de l'Anxova
This is a feast day that is devoted to none other than the lowly anchovy! L'Escala's history as a fishing village shines through in the observance of this unique holiday. On this day, the world-famous anchovies of L'Escala are the star of the show; far from being put on a pedestal, the anchovies are instead put on plates and in various dishes for everyone to enjoy.
December 25: Christmas
Christmas is the last major celebration of the year. It is always a special occasion in L'Escala as it always is in other countries as well. On Christmas Eve, people attend the midnight mass, the Missa de Gallo. At the strike of 12 midnight, people celebrate with lavish parties and fireworks.
