Figueres is the capital of the comarca (similar to a county in the US or a shire in the UK) of Alt Empord a region of Girona in the Autonomous Region of Catalonia in Spain. The town has international renown as the birthplace of the surrealist Salvador Dali. In Figueres, one will also find a museum dedicated to the master. Another prominent figure who hailed from Figueres is the inventor of the first combustion-powered submarine, Narcis Monturiol.
